What type of DNA sample is required?
The test uses Saliva as the sample type. The benefits being that they are convenient and painless to collect, and are easily transportable and stable. The quality of DNA collected is as good as, and the results as accurate as, from blood or saliva.
When can the sample be taken?
The only restriction is to abstain from eating or drinking for at least 1 hour before taking the test. The test results are not affected by any environmental aspect such as food, drink, medication, supplements or illness.
How long before I get my results back?
It takes up to 2-3 weeks for the results to be processed and back to you.
How will I receive my results?
You will receive your results via the email given when you purchased the DNA Test Kit.
Are the results accurate?
It tests for common variances, which occur in at least 1% of the global population. The genotyping methodology that we use is very accurate (at least 99.9%).
Is the interpretation accurate?
Research to support the genotype interpretations is fully referenced in the report and is available to view online. Tests are created and reviewed, regularly, by staff qualified in genetics, nutrigenomics, nutritional science, and research techniques.
Will the report explain or predict health issues or disease?
We tests common variants (SNPs) that have the potential to alter gene expression and impact health. The report will include nutrition and lifestyle advice on how to compensate for potential SNP impacts and manage the associated risk.
How do you do the genetic analysis?
We screen your genetic data for the presence of “markers” in your DNA – which are single-letter variations – to calculate your lifestyle disease risk, predisposition to traits, drug response, etc. We have developed a robust algorithm that is used for analysis, based on genetic markers present in your DNA sample. These single-letter variations are known as Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms or SNPs.
Do you get better data with blood samples, compared to saliva/swabs for the genetic test?
The accuracy of genotype data obtained from buccal swabs is on par with that of blood samples. Our R&D Lab has standardized effective protocols for DNA processing from buccal swabs as well as blood. There are several quality standards in place, for ensuring maximum sample quality and data accuracy. Right from initial plausibility checks to final data review, trained staff adhere to validated procedures in our R&D partner’s NABL-certified laboratory.
If I am marked as high risk in the genetic test, does it imply that I will get that disease?
No, having a high genetic risk does not imply that you will get the disease. For a disease to have a clinical manifestation, there are several other influencing factors such as familial history, lifestyle, clinical history and exposure to environmental factors.
